Assumes 10% home-charging losses (typical for Level 2: 5–15%). Electricity rates are statewide residential averages — many utilities offer off-peak EV plans that cut the effective rate 30–50%, so your real cost may be lower. Picking a state loads both its electricity rate and its local gas price, so the comparison stays apples-to-apples. Rates: EIA Electric Power Monthly (May 2026, latest state-level). Gas: AAA state averages, both retrieved August 2, 2026 — override either field with your own price. Estimates only, not a quote.

How the math works

The calculator uses one formula for the EV side and one for gas, then compares them:

  • EV cost per mile = your electricity rate ÷ your EV's efficiency (miles per kWh) × 1.10 to account for Level 2 charging losses (typically 5–15%).
  • Gas cost per mile = your gas price per gallon ÷ your car's MPG.
  • Charger payback = your install cost ÷ your annual savings, converted to months.

Every field is editable. The defaults reflect a typical mid-size EV (3.5 mi/kWh), a 28-MPG comparison car, and 13,500 miles driven per year — the U.S. average. Swap in your own numbers for an exact answer.

Data sources & dates

Electricity rates for all 50 states plus D.C. come from the U.S. Energy Information Administration's Electric Power Monthly(May 2026 data, the latest available state-level figures), retrieved August 2, 2026. Gas prices are AAA state averages(national $4.096) for the same date — picking a state loads both its electricity rate and its local gas price, so the comparison stays apples-to-apples. Enter your own price to override. Rates change monthly; this page is re-verified on a schedule.
